Election results from last night are in, and we’ve managed to retain our 5 existing seats on Stroud District Council despite strong opposition in some wards. This means we retain a total of 6 seats on the council. A big thank you to all our candidates and activists! And welcome to Kevin Cranston, our new Green Councillor for Stroud Central, replacing previous Green Councillor Caroline Molloy.

General Election Results
In the General election, Stroud seems to be a true “barometer”, with the results here very closely mirroring the results nationwide. Neil Carmichael holds the seat for the Conservatives, with Labour unexpectedly losing ground. As usual, the Green vote was heavily squeezed by “tactical voting”, with many Green supporters opting to support Labour in an attempt to keep Carmichael out. It’s perhaps worth noting, however, that if everyone who voted Green had voted Labour, Labour still wouldn’t have won.
All the same, Sarah Lunnon made a modest gain for the Greens with 2779 votes, notably beating the Lib Dems (she got 4.6% of the vote share, up 1.9 percentage points on last years results). The big changes since 2010 were the disintegration of the Lib Dems (down 12%) and the rise of UKIP (up 5.7%).
General Election results for Stroud in full: Conservative 27,813; Labour 22,947; UKIP 4,848; Green 2,779; Lib Dem 2,086; Rich Wilson (“My MP”) 246; Free Public Transport Party 100.

The Cotswolds has long been a safe Tory seat, so no particular surprise that Conservative Geoffrey Clifton-Brown romped home with 56.5% of the vote in the Parliamentary election. However, Penny Burgess made a respectable showing for the Greens with 4.6%, a gain of 2.9 percentage points since 2010.
General election results in full for The Cotswolds: Conservative 32,045; Lib Dem 10,568; UKIP 6,188; Labour 5,240; Green 2,626.
Cotswold District Council Elections
The Cotswolds seems to be one of the few places in the country where (in the local elections at least) it’s deemed OK to be a Liberal Democrat. With total dominance of the District Council by the Conservatives and Lib Dems, and with Labour standing only 7 candidates in 34 seats, many electors would have been faced with no left wing option of any kind on their papers; were it not for a few plucky Greens throwing their hats into the ring.
